If you do the work from PHP, more easy implosible as the data is a
simple serialized array. If not, we would need to think if we want or
not invest the work on converting the Registry class to handle the new
format :-)

There are support for infinite subcategories because we use the
Visitation Model (also known as Nested Sets). I can open the subcategory
you want.
