Works fine on my 2 linux boxes, (wget method, CLI does not want to compile :( )

Just a remark :
$pear_cmd = which('pear');
$in_path = !empty($pear_cmd);
if (empty($pear_cmd)) {
$pear_cmd = "$bin_dir/pear";
}
should be replace by
$pear_cmd = "$bin_dir/pear";
or tell the user another pear command is installed in the path $pear_cmd and does not match the
selected installations folder "$prefix".
If you have many installations or simply changed the installation folder and keep the default
installation, that may cause users use the old default installed pear.
