it does do
$my_inventry = new DataObject_Inventory;
$my_inventry->setFrom($_POST);
$my_inventry->insert();
or
$my_inventry =DataObject_Inventory::staticGet($_POST['id']);
$my_inventry->setFrom($_POST);
$my_inventry->update();
which is pretty similar :)
