I forget to mention that the "php-only" way is still avaible:
c:> php-cli -r "readfile('http://pear.php.net/go-pear');" > go-pear
c:> php-cli -d output_buffering=0 go-pear
Note that the "-d output_buffering=0" is needed. At least during my
tries under XP I was not able to make the output appear without that
(PHP bug?).

Fixed: I learned the lesson: "Under Windows one can not delete a
directory opened with opendir() and not properly closed then with
closedir()"

Fixed: Now if you choose "Install bundled packages" go-pear will install
Net_Socket and Net_SMTP too.

I've analysed this problem, but have to spend more time on it, time that
I don't have right now (I spend too much time trying to do simple things
under Windows). I'm going to put the proper replacements in pear.bat
too.

Will look.
