in a database abstraction layer you have to consider what feautres are
natively offered by databases. you can not use placeholders anywhere
with for example odbc (and probably others who support
binding/placeholders natively). because of this limitation, I think it
is dangerous to go too far down this road without knowing what you're
doing. even if it would make your life easier (which is always a very
worthwhile goal :)
