I think that Alan's Weekly News is a 'very good thing' (TM), IMHO it might be
even better if we had an RSS feed of the news. The advantage is multiple:
1) We can generate the HTML from the RSS document
2) We can also make plain text for email distribution
3) Other sites can pick the RSS as any other news feed
The translations are good too, but I am not sure how much value they are adding
to the whole. Making the news more easily distributable might be more efficient
in terms of results/effort ratio (a new index I'll call the
'write-once-get-lots-of-noise' factor).
I can imagine a simple web based form where Alan (and/or the translators) put
the text for each new item, and valid RSS is generated automagically. Which can
always be edited by hand by people with XML-warped minds and fingers ;-). Then
once the news feed is aproved and ready to go, HTML is generated, an plain text
email goes to pear-general, and it is copied to a canonical URL, e.g.
http://pear.php.net/pwn.rss (for PEAR Weekly News)
Any ideas, comments, better names for the WOGLON index? ;-)
