Good question!
It's as vulnerable as you want to make it, as you can
1. use https
2. authentication by ip (built-in already) or public/private key
3. encrypt the data using some method such as blowfish
Or to put it another way, its as vulnerable as SOAP or XML-RPC.
Personally, I only use this in an intranet situation,
and we also block all access by IP.
