The current tars seem to work fine. This bug'd best be closed, since
it's also not reproducable anymore :)

I also see those warnings, but I don't think they make the archives
corrupted.

The content seems to be OK (at least the few files I
looked at manually). Main error/warning given by tar was a
complain that the timestamp is in the future:
...
tar: standards.comments.html: time stamp 2003-10-26
03:05:47 is 15118 s in the future
tar: standards.control.html: time stamp 2003-10-26
03:05:47 is 15118 s in the future
tar: standards.cvs.html: time stamp 2003-10-26 03:05:48 is
15119 s in the future
tar: standards.exampleurls.html: time stamp 2003-10-26
03:05:48 is 15119 s in the future
tar: standards.funcalls.html: time stamp 2003-10-26
03:05:47 is 15118 s in the future
tar: standards.funcdef.html: time stamp 2003-10-26
03:05:47 is 15118 s in the future
tar: standards.header.html: time stamp 2003-10-26 03:05:47
is 15118 s in the future
...
Tested on a SuSE 8.2 Linux machine, using GNU tar 1.13.25,
with the command line:
$ tar zxf pear_manual_en.tar.gz
BTW, a .tar.gz created from my local copy of the peardoc
does not suffer of the problem mentioned by Greg, I did:
$ autoconf
$ configure
$ make
$ make pear_manual_en.tar.gz
$ mkdir x
$ cd x
$ tar zxf ../pear_manual_en.tar.gz
(no warnings/errors at all)

Description:
------------
every .tar.* (.tar.gz, .tar.gz2) of the manual is corrupted, probably
because .tar does not do well at all with long filenames. Several of
them are cut off in spreadsheet-excel-writer
Unless this can be successfully fixed, I would suggest adding a note at
the website, as the .zip download is fine.
