New Comment:
There is no such things like "Is PEAR installed or not?", because PEAR
consists of hundreds of (mostly disjunct) packages.
Most likely you might want to try to include PEAR.php. If this fails,
at least the base PEAR package is not in your site's include_path. But
this does not mean that PEAR isn't there at all (it just isn't in your
include_path) or that other PEAR packages are not there. It *just*
means that one single component of PEAR could not be found.

Description:
------------
I suggest that on the FAQ page for PEAR that you add a question that
tells users how to find out if pear is installed or not easily. I need
this information because I don't know if my ISP has installed PEAR or
not, and it is not obvious how to find out easily if it is installed or
not.
