Umm, so I take it from the complete lack of any interest in this post, that nobody on this mailing list uses Debian? :-( If anyone has any experience getting pear/pecl to work on Debian, I'd appreciate at least a pointer. Thanks.

Hi, everyone. I've read through the archives and haven't found anything about this so I'm hoping someone can give me some insight. First of all, to be clear (since I know Debian is quirky), I read in one of the posts that the Debian package php4-pear doesn't work correctly, and that you should install manually, so I did that. That seemed to work fine -- I was able to install the baseline packages and if I type "pear list" I get this output: Installed packages: ===================Package Version State Archive_Tar 1.1 stable Console_Getopt 1.2 stable DB 1.5.0RC2 stable Mail 1.1.2 stable Net_SMTP 1.2.3 stable Net_Socket 1.0.1 stable PEAR 1.3b5 beta PHPUnit 0.6.2 stable XML_Parser 1.0.1 stable XML_RPC 1.0.4 stable---- Now, here's my problem: when I go to install a PECL module, the world seems to blow up. I am just not an expert at autoconf (which is where some of this magic happens) and I've seen things on newsgroups about m4 being goofy on Debian (which may indicate at least one of the problems below), but, honestly, shouldn't this just *work*?!? :-) Here's the problem. For example, I type: # pear install zip (or I can manually download the zip-1.0.tgz file from the PECL repository; same behavior). The result is the output below. Can someone help me figure out why these errors occurred? For one thing, why doesn't pear know about PATH_SEPARATOR? For another, php-config is in /usr/bin just like the configuration file thinks it should be, so why does it generate the error message? But *most importantly* (since I hacked around the other two errors while troubleshooting this), why on earth does configure tell me "can not find sources"??!?!?! Thanks heaps for any help. Output below: ---- # pear install zip Notice: Use of undefined constant PATH_SEPARATOR - assumed 'PATH_SEPARATOR' in Command.php on line 205 downloading zip-1.0.tgz ...
