I find that this is not true - it depends on the web hosting IPs - I
find that quite a few I've looked into *do not* include the PEAR with
the PHP installation, and some of them refuses to include\install with
PEAR.
You can find out by doing a phpinfo.php run - in the Configure Command
section, if it says "--with-pear" - it's been installed with PEAR. If
it doesnt' have that information, likely it hasn't.
I have the PHP Developer's Cookbook, and I wish that it has a note
somewhere on the front or back cover cover saying that PEAR is required
to use some of the recipes...

This whole PEAR thing is really confusing. The sites documentation is
crap
compared to PHP. what is it and how do i install it on my windows
system?
and more, importantly do i have 2 force my host to install it or can i
do it
myself. i'm just looking to use the file_find package.
they say pear is automatically installed with php4 but i cant seem to
find
it.
