is there a rule to choose version of a class, package or software? If not, could somebody give an ideia about when upgrade from 0.2 to 0.3 or 0.2.1. and what is alpha, betha, RC, devel, snapshot..... What is the first version number I can choose? Does pear follow some conventional for versioning?
Hello Marcos, There are strict rules for versioning in PEAR. The version number looks like major [.minor [.patch]] [pre] - "major" version: numeric "0" means that the package is experimental - "minor" version: may contain new features, backward-compatibility maintained - "patch" version: bug fixes, tiny changes that shouldn't affect functionality - "pre" element: {dev,a,b,RC,pl} You decide if you want to upgrade. You may always click on 'Changelog' on the package description page to see what's been changed. (e.g. http://pear.php.net/package/DB_DataObject) Best practice: always update on "minor" or "less-than-minor" version changes. These changes shouldn't affect backward-compatiblity. However, my personal suggestion to you is to always have a backup from your pear/ tree before doing any updates. For your further interest, you may want to read more about backward-compatibility (BC) breaking releases.
