phpize failed

Hi,
I'm currently adding some packages to my PEAR. Therefor (Auth_Radius) I have to install the package radius (PECL). But this will not do as I want it to.
It gets me an error:"phpize failed". (My PHP-Version is 4.3.4)
Could you tell me what this means?
