getting to grips with pear

hi, I am just starting to use pear and am trying to convert a little test site to it. It is currently working with straight php and mysql. Could anyone point me to info about populating selects from a db? I can't seem to get started with quickform and db together, though separately I seem to be able to get them doing what I want.
