yes this example i tried...
i had to patch the Smarty.php renderer class of SDG
so that i could use my preconfigured SmartyClass (with own tmplate and cache
paths and so on)
somethings didnt work in the example:
pagination -> it alway rendered ALL Data (not the number )
sorting links -> didnt show up

yes, this would be easy if i had also made the design
but the design part does someone other(a designer) which would definifly
destroy the code... thats why it would be cool to use templates
i looked over your smarty class... isnt it possible to write a function like
this?
$mysmarty = new MySmarty();
$mysmarty->assign(.......);
$mysmarty->$myDataGrid->renderer->assignToSmarty()
$mysmarty->assign(.......);
