Hi!
If you don't have PEAR with your PHP, make sure you downloaded the
.zip Win32 binary distribution.
If you have PHP 4.2.1, there should be a PEAR.bat file - this runs
the PEAR installer. You'll probably need to hack the bat file around
before it'll work entirely properly.
If in doubt, there is a pear.in (or it might just be called pear)
file in the pear/scripts directory - the PEAR installer. It's a PHP
script, so you can run it with 'PHP -q pear.in' or 'PHP-CLI pear.in'.
You'll notice that despite the fact that there are PEAR packages
available with the PEAR distribution that comes in the PHP .zip
archive, but there are no corresponding PEAR .registry entries.
You'll need to install the packages from downloaded archives
(http://pear.php.net/packages.php and download .tgz files).
If you want to install PEAR-0.11 or later, you'll notice that it
requires Console_Getopt-0.11 or later to be installed, but after you
install Console_Getopt the PEAR installer stops working completely.
This is because the you need to upgrade both packages simultaneously,
which is clearly impossible.
To work around this, extract PEAR package from the archive it comes
in manually and install the files to where they belong, which should
get the PEAR installer working properly. Now use the PEAR installer
to install the PEAR package properly. You'll need to make sure that
the bin_dir PEAR installer configuration variable is set to your
pear/scripts directory or the installation will crash and burn.
And it took me three days to figure that little lot out. ;-)
