Problem with PHP_Compat and it's file_put_contents function

I am receiving the following error when I try to write a file to disk
file_put_contents() Only 0 of 37327 bytes written, possibly out of free disk
space. in /usr/share/pear/PHP/Compat/Function/file_put_contents.php on line

Anybody know what this means?
We definitely have enough disk space(over 80gigs free).
