actually "pear install tree-beta" is cleaner .. -f essentially forces the install while appending the state means "only ignore the state setting"

is that stable enough for large scale implementations?

I would not recommend using tree or xipe .. xipe is somewhat orphaned and there are some hurdles with tree that still need to be tackled.. regards, Lukas
