Lorenzo, I have attached a class that I have written following the pear standards to handle translations for an international site I am in the middle of building. Instead of keeping the translations in a database or text file, I store the translations in a PHP array. The class then edits the file that holds the array of translations so that it is completely manageable as well as fast loading. I hope that you can add this to the translation2 package as another container option.
