pear5 - SuSE quirk or normal with php5?

I installed SuSE 9.3 which comes with PHP 5.0.3 and PEAR. After much searching and wondering I found that I have to use "pear5" instead of "pear" to list or install packages, upgrade pear etc.
Is this normal with PHP 5 or is it a special SuSE quirk?
