APD on OS X

Has anyone else had trouble installing APD on OS X? I'm using PHP 5.0.4 from http://www.entropy.ch on a clean install of Tiger, with PEAR 1.4.0a11
% sudo pear install pecl/apd
seemed to work fine, but when I try to load apd in either my php.ini file or using dl() I get the error:
