Auth timeout

Is there anyway to stop Auth timing out.
Both expire and idle are set to 0 (default).
But if a page is just left open, i'm not sure
how long it takes to expire, but if i click on
a link some time later it displays the login
page.
Auth::getStatus() isn't returning
AUTH_IDLED or AUTH_EXPIRED either.
