Yes, run a phpinfo() and check the GD block. You should see these two lines: FreeType Support enabled FreeType Linkage with freetype If your shared host doesn't have this, you can try convincing them to recompile PHP for you (they might, if you convince them that they forgot an essential component), or you can move to another host.
