XML package to setup a REST service

Im looking into a REST alternative to SOAP due to speed in requests and easier to setup for an Ajax request as the client is generally just passing strings. I was wondering if there is an XML package that is already available to help with setting up the webservice methods and the requests ? I guess a client class to for requesting and parsing the results ? If not has anyone thought of a package like this ?
