I'll bet that he is not saying there's something wrong with compiling source. But with the package-based systems (like RPM, apt, yast/2, etc.) you lose your dependency trees when you install from source. For example, if I compiled apache, then the RPM database would know nothing about it, and would think it was not installed. So if I then tried to install mod_python from the RPM, it would query the database for apache (not there) and would complain eternally. Your only solution is to install apache from the RPM, or use the 'atom bomb' option, otherwise known as --force. This pretty much blows your dependencies to bits, obviating the whole purpose of a package management system (IMNSHO). More than that, some package systems can 'automagically fetch' dependent ones for you. I once had a debian box with (something, say mysql, I forget) installed from source, tuned for a specific hardware-based issue. I then used 'apt-get install blah', and apt decided that I needed mysql (source install, remember?). When I did not notice this, it then downloaded the binary for mysql and blew out my perfect, pristine source install... I really, REALLY want to try gentoo, as it uses a sources-based packaging system called Portage. This looks most interesting to me, as all libraries are specifically taken into account. This would solve dependency issues like php-mysql needing mysql 3.23, when you got 4.x and so on... The linux equivalent of 'DLL hell'. -- Mitch
