I have had problems when tables require more memory,than php.ini's memory_limit.
It's solved quite easy with ini_set("memory_limit", "someMoreMemory");
(http://no2.php.net/ini-set)
But, with the right error_reporting you should be told that you have reached the
limit, the script should not just die.
