I also had lots of trouble with the createTables.php --> although I received no error messages, it just seemed to hang. I did a bit of debugging and found that it wasn't connecting properly to my MySQL database, but didn't give a fault at all -- just seemed to stop working about half-way through a line and return to the command line in *nix. Due to lack of time to continue figuring it all out, I've just started manually defining the tables in my database. All the other functionality works fine when I do this, so I'd suggest (unless your DB is very complex) that you try the same?
