New to PEAR, want to use it, was getting this message:

The extension 'zlib' couldn't be loaded. Probably you don't have support in your PHP to this extension

zlib was not in my PHP, so I recompiled. now phpinfo() says:
ZLib Support
enabled
Compiled Version
1.1.4
Linked Version
1.1.4
Now I still get the exact same message: The extension 'zlib' couldn't be loaded.
What am I missing? A search on zlib on the lists did not yield helpful info (although I certainly could have missed something).
