Manual WinXP installation??

Hi All, Is there anywhere where there is a complete description of how to configure PEAR, and its directories MANUALLY. How the directories should be laid out; where; when environment variables should be set; and what should be in php.ini? None of various console mode and WebInstallers have worked correctly. After many attempts, I have several (empty) directories called PEAR, scattered throughout my computer. Many go-pear.phps, and so forth. But, I have yet to come across some explanation how to set up the system manually when all the automatic stuff fails to function as expected.
