Hi John,
When I downloaded PHP 4.3.2 on Windows XP, I was able to get the go-pear .php script to work on the first try. If you'd like, I'd be happy to correspond and try to figure out an automatic solution, or at least what is causing the bug so that the maintainers of PEAR can fix it for the next release.
If you don't have the time or interest, at the very least it would be helpful to know a detailed description of your configuration (where PHP is located, what you typed to install PEAR), as that might be able to find the bug too.
The best way to install PEAR manually is to download the packages you want, and then read the package.xml file as another user suggested. Read the filelist baseinstalldir attribute, taking into account that "/" means the root C:\path\to\php\pear\ directory, not C:\, and "Name" means C:\path\to\php\pear\Name, "Name/sub" is C:\path\to\php\pear\Name\sub, etc.
When you extract the package, it will most likely be in Root_PackageName-x.y/ where x.y is the version number. You will probably have to create the directory Root/ and copy the contents to that directory.
Things get complicated because you need to also examine the role attribute. role="php" means the file should be placed in C:\path\to\php\pear\Name\... role="data" means the file should be placed in the C:\path\to\php\pear\data\Name\... subdirectory, and role="doc" in C:\path\to\php\pear\docs\Name\... subdirectory. Personally, I would only worry about role="data", as some packages rely upon this being in a data directory.
In other words, it might be faster to figure out why PEAR isn't installing properly :)
Regards,
Greg

Hi All, Is there anywhere where there is a complete description of how to configure PEAR, and its directories MANUALLY. How the directories should be laid out; where; when environment variables should be set; and what should be in php.ini? None of various console mode and WebInstallers have worked correctly. After many attempts, I have several (empty) directories called PEAR, scattered throughout my computer. Many go-pear.phps, and so forth. But, I have yet to come across some explanation how to set up the system manually when all the automatic stuff fails to function as expected. Help would be appreciated, thanks. :-) John (Montgomery, Web Design Unit, 01224 273218, j.t.montgomery@abdn.ac.uk) Open Day 2003 - Tuesday 26th August For more details see: http://www.abdn.ac.uk/openday
