The HDD cache may get filled with other data being accessed, such as MySQL table data files, XML files etc. At least having a virtual RAM drive *guarantees* they will always be in memory and available. Of course, it also depends on how big you make your HDD cache i guess. Note that i've not actually done any of this for PHP, last time i did it was on my Amiga using the RAM: device for instant scratch storage.
