I can easily see it being slower. The Net_Imap is actually a script that
uses Net_Socket to connect to the IMAP server.
The build-in imap_* functions, ofcourse do roughly the same, bt they are
written in C, while the PEAR modules are written in PHP, which creates a
significant overhead.
I guess the Net_Imap package, like the Mail_Mime and many other packages are
created for those cases where imap isn't compiled into PHP, but you still
need to access an IMAP server.
