On OSX, to have PECL and PEAR work, I suggest you install 'dlcompat' from
opendarwin and recompile PHP in version 4.3.3. PEAR will be installed in
/usr/local/lib/php and the PHP binary in /usr/local/bin/php. PECL and the
dl() function will work.
Recompiling PHP will mess with Apple's own install paths but who cares. They
shouldn't have installed PHP in such locations in the first place. So you
might want to remove everything that is PHP related before actually
installing PHP on your system.
