Just to provide a few more details, this php5 bug
http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=24687 precludes
directly returning a
reference by calling another function which returns a reference. In other
words:
function &getSomeReference()
{
return getSomeOtherReference();
}
will not work. IMHO opinion, this will break most php4 oop code. It
certainly breaks mine. Comments in the bug report indicate that this bug
will not be fixed. However, the status has recently been changed from Open
to Assigned. So perhaps there is some hope. I would suggest that pear
developers try their code under php5 and complain to the php core group
about this. It's not just the bc breakage but the alternative (using a tmp
variable to hold the reference) is ugly.
