I think it's clearest to just leave pacakges named as they are. If old
pacakges are deprecated, mark them as such and point to the better
package.
In terms of tracking deprecation, perhaps it would be good to put a new
column in the database's packages table named superceded_by that would
contain the name of the new/better package. If that field contains a
value, a deprecation warning is printed on the package page and a
hyperlink is presented to the improved one.
