Hi:
A few weeks ago I committed code that can be used for generating
CAPTCHAs for pearweb. It can then be extrapolated for use on the
other php.net sites.
The source of the image generation is at:
http://cvs.php.net/co.php/pearweb/public_html/captcha-image.php
and the value generation is at the bottom of:
http://cvs.php.net/co.php/pearweb/include/pear-format-html.php
In order to allow testing before deployment, the code I posted doesn't
generate images on the form pages yet. To see what the CAPTCHAs look
like, go to this page to initialize a captcha session var:
http://pear.php.net/bugs/bug.php?id=14&edit=3
Then view the image here:
http://pear.php.net/captcha-help.php
Once the system goes live, a link to the help page will be placed next
to the the CAPTCHA input.
I chose letters that are fuzzy so they would be harder to decipher via
optical character recognition, which is a real problem for CAPTCHA
systems. Of course, the fuzzyness makes it a bit harder for people to
read too, but I feel the tradeoff is worth it. If the letters
presented in a give CAPTCHA are REALLY too hard new rendering of the
same letters is obtainable by refreshing the help page.
Please let me know what you think.
