You do not have to use PHP cvs however it is strongly recommended. Why?
Your code got reviewed on a regular basis, it is easy for one to send
you patches or improvements. You can even get fixes to get your
extension working with the latest php versions.

Please note that the version has to be in the x.y.z form, like 0.1.0
for the very first version. You also need to create a PEAR package
before you can upload a release. Take a look at the other extensions
(in php cvs, the pecl modules) to see how it works. If you have any
issues or questions, feel free to ask us (being in our cvs can also
ease your work in this phase :)
