Looks to me like the amf folder (which is inherited from long ago) may be the problem. I removed amf from the ext directory of my php-5.3.6 source dir: mv ext/amf ../ Then I performed the rm and buildconf steps (note that I have removed autoconf 2.13 and am back to using 2.67 which seems to work: rm -rf config.cache autom4te.* ./buildconf --force I then ran configure without any reference to --enable-amf and it appears to have worked just fine: ./configure --with-apxs2=/usr/bin/apxs2 --with-mysql --enable-exif --enable-ftp --enable-mbstring --with-mysqli --with-pdo-mysql --enable-soap --enable-sockets --enable-wddx --with-xmlrpc --enable-zip --with-openssl --with-curl --with-gd --with-mcrypt --with-jpeg-dir=/usr/lib --enable-pcntl --prefix=/usr --enable-debug It's obviously something wrong with the configure/config.m4 files. I'm not familiar with the syntax of these files and am unsure what sort of reference to search for. Any tips would be much appreciated.
