I don't think that PHP can be changed much to make it easier.
If you use an RPM-based Linux, then remove your imap-devel package and
use this one instead:
http://rpms.arvin.dk/rh7-backports/imap-no_kerberos/
That makes it quite a bit easier to compile PHP with imap-support.
