PHP Test results

I installed PHP 4.20 RC4 on my Apche 2.0.35 server and everything works fine, except one thing: If i call a script from the browser like this: http://localhost/test.php?mode=itworks and for example in the script there is: echo $mode; it prints nothing on the screen!! and if i run php 4.1.2 on the server and call the script, i have \'itworks\' on the screen! the same problem i have with html-forms!
