When a bug is "merged" into another, great care needs to be taken that additional info is not lost or buried... Ideally, the submitter would be prompted to compare their report side-by-side and be able to annotate the original or even make theirs the "canonical" report and the original the "duplicate" if they feel theirs is inherently superior... That may be too much power though... I guess so long as they can't completely "suppress" the other report, it's always something the developers can track down... It might be worthwhile for a bug to automatically display how many "duplicate" reports it has, as well as allow developers to view all the reports, perhaps even writing up a new one to encompass all the others...
