The latest Win32 developer snapshots contain the bundled gd
library in php_gd2.dll. Normally the snapshots are available
from php.net [1] but it seems that the zip file has some
problems, try if from Edin's site [2] first.
The bundled library is linked against libpng, libjpg and
freetype2. Idially, there shouldn't be any difference between
prior version.
Problems with font loading have been adressed. By default,
the font is tried to be loaded from c:\\winnt\fonts , if you
need to load them from another path you have to modify the
environment variable GDFONTPATH, e.g.
<?php
// loading the dll
putenv("GDFONTPATH=y:\\myfonts");
[...]
?>
The GDFONTPATH is in fact a list of paths, separted by the
';' character on Win32 platforms (':' on unix):
<?php
// loading the dll
putenv("GDFONTPATH=y:\\myfonts;c:\\winnt\fonts");
[...]
?>
The above examples first tries to find the font in y:\myfonts
and if not found tries to fint it in c:\winnt\fonts .
If you've installed your Win32 system on another drive or
have not installed it in c:\winnt , the default path will not
work and you will have to set GDFONTPATH regardless.
If you still have problems finding the correct font file, try
the strace utility for Win32 [3] which can help you identify
why your file can't be found.
You only have to name the font by it's filename WITHOUT the
trailing '.ttf'. This is automatically appended when trying
to find the file!
Also note, when you use the explorer to browse your
c:\winnt\fonts (or similar) directory, it is not the
'Fontname' you need to pass to the PHP functions but the
'Filename' which can differ:
Arial -> ARIAL.TTF
but
Avant Garde Medium Oblique BT -> AVGARDMI.TTF
ps: if someone knows some kind of complex gd scripts which
don't depend on a database for testing I'ld like to know :-)
happy testing,
- Markus
