I wonder if you could clarify (or link to, if possible) the rules for
licenses. I would be happy to gain an understanding of what rules
govern code in the cvs repository, vs that which we release, or make
available on the website.
While it would be nice if we could simply put all of the benchmark
code into a license of our choosing, I'm not sure this will be the
case. For the better_benchmarks project, we are deliberately choosing
benchmarks which exist already. While I haven't looked, it is likely
that some of these will be under the GPL. While we may be able to
exploit loopholes for the V8 benchmarks, we will not be able to do so
for many of the larger benchmarks. It would be better to make an
exception for benchmarks, rather than ban them.
Also, on a personal note, while I don't like the GPL myself, I do
respect an author's choice of license. If somebody chooses to license
some benchmark under the GPL, I do not believe that changing the
license does right by the author, even if we are legally allowed to do
this.
Thanks,
Paul
