It's not a question of open-mindness, it's a matter of estimate. My estimate is that due to the fact that PHP isn't mature enough to be a good solution for production servers under Windows, the number of production sites that use it is relatively small. At any rate, the number of future users far exceeds the number of current users (again, my estimate, considering PHP will get more and more stable under Windows), so I don't want to 'pollute' everyone's installation with .php3 extensions just because there are a few sites today that may benefit from it. These sites can simply ask for the Advanced installation. I'll talk with Tobias to ensure that the next release of phpMyAdmin uses .php extensions instead of .php3 extensions.
