As read in the Smarty Docs: Anything within {strip}{/strip} tags are stripped of the extra spaces or carriage returns at the beginnings and ends of the lines before they are displayed. So, this is to be used when needing a portion of text/html (not php or XML code) trimed and without carriage return. The existence of <?xml will break the function itself since it was not created to handle, as stated, any kind of code besides text and HTML. This function is not broken, the usage you are giving is just not the intended. Best regards, Miguel Simões
