Smarty memory consumption

Hi everybody,
I have a script which sets about a hundread php variables with preferences with values 'y'
or 'n',
the script uses smarty->assign_by_ref to assign the variables to smarty variables.
After some tests I concluded that the assign statements are making PHP cosunme a lot
of memory (a lot more than expected). Can this be possible?
I'm getting a lot of support requests and similar due to PHP exceding the default 8MB execution
time.
Any hints or comments will be welcome.
