oracle connection problems

we are encountering strange connection errors to an oracle database, errors
that we cannot reproduce.. every now and then php reports that it cant find
the service name in the tnsnames.ora and causes a httpd defunct..
the time for this error can take anywhere up to 3 hours to appear..
is this a known bug? do others also have a similar problem?
we have redhat 6.1, apache 1.3.11, phpb4(pl1+oci8patch), oracle client
8.0.5+glibc patch.. the oracle server we are connecting to is on linux, also
8.0.5..
