BUG #1: PHP discards extensions defined prior to the 'extension_dir' definition in PHP.ININo it doesn't; The php.ini file is executed sequentially, so the extension_dir is not set for the extension entries appearing before it. Thus, it may not find your extensions until the extension_dir line.
BUG #2: PHP does not handle white space properly when parsing initialization parameters in PHP.INI SYMPTOMS: #1. When PHP extension definitions such as "extension=php_mysql" are located prior to the "extension_dir=" definition in the PHP.INI file, PHP4 may discard or ignore previous extension definitions. This has nothing to do with the extension_dir, see above. Whitespace handling in the extension directive is indeed lacking, and we'll fix that sometime. There is no plan to change the parsing model of the php.ini file, though, so you would have to move your extension lines to be after the extension_dir line.
