Hello Ly, On 30-Mar-00 17:11:04, you wrote: > Not meant to create any religious war here, but ... Joey, do you use >the screwdriver to hammer in nails? %^) I agree that PHP is very good a general purpose scripting language. I for once use it to setup appllications, installing databases, processing and sending email and all that is done in the backend without a Web server using the PHP standalone CGI executable. I don't miss other languages for that matters and I know that I much more productive if I only use one language for all the tasks of each application that I develop because I don't have to relearn each language everytime that I switch between them and I also get to reuse a lot of code that is use for the Web frontend in the backend tasks that an application requires. Just an example, look at this site to have an idea of what it does in the Web frontend. It is a repository of PHP code in form of classes of objects. http://phpclasses.UpperDesign.com/ In the backend I use PHP to install the database or update its schema everytime I need to upgrade. I have 3 cron triggered tasks that are executed by PHP scripts: one setup and call htdig to reindex the whole site daily, another delivers email notifications to thousands of users when a new class is added or an existing class is updated and another just saves daily web server logs to somewhere it could be analysed. I didn't have difficulties when using PHP to implement the scripts to execute these tasks. So, I don't see why PHP can't be see as an "hammer" for these "nails". >> > Morever, PHP is a server-side scripting language, and its forte is in >> > the area of dynamically generating pages quickly; thus validating XML >> > documents can be done offline or much less frequent than cranking out >> > the response pages (either HTML or XML).
