JSP vs. PHP - Two vs. Three TeirI never test the engine, but I think PHP is a native. PHP didn;t
need JVM, because it is build in the module (if use an apache, and build in the ISAPI for IIS).
I sicking developing in Java, because Java need more resource.
I saw C still the best, but, I am no Computer Science background, I usually moving in Business
Application like Oracle App, SAP, iPlanet.

Your definition of 3-tier #2 is the same as ours. As far as PHP and an IDE, we currently use
Allaires homesite as a powerful and configurable code editor but yes something tailor to PHP is a
worthwhile effort.
How do you know that PHP4 is faster than JSP. Our in house benchmarks show there pretty much the
same-- PHP4 with out byte code.
In summary, you believe PHP4 is sufficient for a 3-tier enterprise applications?
thanks!michael

May I join for this discussion?
In my mind there is 2 kind of 3-tier:
1. 3-tier in physic, 1 Web Server/Executable (VB/FoxPro), 2, Apps Server (Jserver, MTS) , 3 DB
Servre_Stored Procedure
2. 3-tier in logic, 1 Presentation Layer (ASP/VB/ 2. Business Layer (COM. JavaBean/EJB), 3 Data
Access Layer.
If I ask something wrong, you can give me a feedback, I need you feedback, because it can make
my perseption of the 3-tier is more clearly.
I think the physical 3-tier is not a problem anymore, every application can implementing it.
but the logic is more complicated. I try to used UML to create the interaction. Afterthat, I
usually create a function which connect to the database, execute, and generate a HTML in fetch_array
and return an array. I used array, and ping-pong the array around the function, it is easier to
manage.
Can you see? In this discussion JSP and PHP, there is a UML implementiation for JSP (and ASP),
but PHP.
I hope one day, there is a extention for Rational Rose for PHP. But the IDE for PHP today, is
PHPEd, is far away from Microsoft Interdev or JDeveloper 3.0.
I think it will be a hard work for all PHP developer (including me), to make a RAD using PHP.
Usually company want to create a web site, faster or fastest than anything.
If you ever see how eStartup work, they usually create a complex business model for their web
site, target in 3 month launch, and in 3 year going IPO.
It is a hard way to develop using PHP. That's why there are a lot of good web site create
by NT Server. and ColdFusion come (I never used this software), but the Allaire HomeSite, is a good
development tool I think.
I have a little objective. PHP will go to enterprise if there is a good or better IDE to help
create web site faster. Because eStartup is fighting in second not in minute again.
I know PHP4 is faster than JSP/ASP, but is longer developing than JSP/ASP, not because PHP is
not powerfull but there is no good IDE.

Are we talking 3 tier or 4 tier? I would call a browser (tier 1), a web server (tier 2), and
a database (tier 3). A four tier model, browser (tier 1), web server (tier 2), some middleware
(tier 3), and a database (tier 4), is very difficult to make efficient.
Also, php does not mean no Java. If you have java services you can call them using php if you
wish.

Hi,
We have been evaluating applications servers written Java, JSP and PHP. We have a need to
implement a three-teir model. Since JSP (and applications servers) provide "services" (aka
daemons) inside the JVM, how can PHP accomplish the same persistent services. Does some C code need
to be written and serviced via a PHP extension to all PHP scripts?
Your opinions are *very* important to us. If any one could comment on how PHP is best suited
for three-teir, we would be very appreciative. It works well for our Intranet and rapid application
development but if I had sum it up in one question it would be:
How can PHP run as a service or daemon?
thanks guys!

Yep. We use CyberCash, and are about to start using it with our new PHP
shopping cart.
It's even one of the options in compiling PHP4. ((--with-cybercash=/ or
something))
You have to get all hooked up with CyberCash first, do that mess, get your
"MCK" download and install it, and THEN recompile PHP4 with it, included.
The CyberCash site has pre-configured MCK kits for Linux Redhat 6.
So - YES - it's do-able.
